Mbappe would face fight to get into this Liverpool team – Grobbelaar

Kylian Mbappe would face a tough battle to get into the Liverpool team, according to Reds great Bruce Grobbelaar.

Liverpool fans have been baying for the club to sign the Paris Saint-Germain and France attacker, amid speculation Jurgen Klopp wants him to join the Premier League champions.

Such a signing would be an extraordinary statement of long-term intent by Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG), given Mbappe is just 21 and looks set to be a global superstar for many years to come.

But Grobbelaar insists World Cup winner Mbappe would not walk straight into Liverpool’s first XI.

“Well, if he comes to Anfield he’s going to have to prove his worth up front for sure. And that’s only if and when he comes,” Grobbelaar told Stats Perform News.

“We do not know what the circumstances is. It will be up to Klopp and FSG who will reveal something probably in the new season.

“But whoever comes to Anfield, as you see with [Takumi] Minamino, he’s going to have to improve a hell of a l..

Barcelona plan to sack coach Quique Setien at the end of the season unless there is a radical improvement

Barcelona are prepared to sack Quique Setien as manager unless results drastically improve and they win the Liga title or Champions League this season, Goal has learned.

The veteran coach, who only took the Camp Nou job in January as replacement for Ernesto Valverde, has lost the confidence of the Barca dressing room, while the club’s board are also unhappy with recent performances.

Unless Barca’s displays for the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign have a significant upswing, it is understood that it is inevitable Setien will leave his post in the summer.

The former Real Betis manager was given a two-and-a-half-year contract in January, however as things stand he will not be able to see out more than a few months of this deal.

Player power at Barcelona is strong – led by stars such as Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique – and the dressing room has turned against Setien due to confusion at his tactics and unhappiness at his comments in the press. Continue reading

Why Tuchel Believes the Champions League Will Be More Difficult For PSG This Season

Thomas Tuchel answered questions on Friday for the first time since last March before the coronavirus pandemic shut down football across the world.

The German manager covered numerous topics (per Culture PSG), including the current state of the team now that we know Edinson Cavani, Thomas Meunier, Adil Aouchiche, and Tanguy Kouassi will depart the club after June 30.

“Are we going to miss these players? Yes because they are an absolutely important part to create the mood and the quality to reach the quarter-finals [of the UEFA Champions League]. We played with Edi and Kouassi, the same with Thomas Meunier, we lack their quality, it is clear and it is now more difficult in this competition. Clearly, yes. Impossible? No, because we are coming to the quarter-finals and I really hope that we can win the two difficult matches that are the cup finals, we will be able to win the competition like the other seven teams. Because we are here, it’s on a match, not a round trip, it’s a tournament..

In Haiti, Coronavirus Spreads in Slums, Showing Challenge for Latin America

Berthony Clermont shares a two-room flat without running water with 10 relatives in the Haitian capital’s Cite Soleil slum, so when he fell ill with the novel coronavirus, they all did.

“I tried staying at home at the beginning but it was difficult to isolate myself as the house is too small,” said the 45-year old. Mistrustful of the dilapidated public healthcare in Haiti – the poorest country in the Americas – Clermont and his family treated themselves at home with herbal teas.

Clermont’s plight is shared by many in Haiti and, more broadly, across the Caribbean and Latin America. Home to 654 million people, it is the most unequal region in the world, according to the United Nations.

As governments in Europe and some parts of Asia have managed to stem the spread of coronavirus, Latin America and the Caribbean have emerged as one of the epicenters of the pandemic.

With confirmed cases globally hitting the 10 million mark on Sunday, the region accounts for around a quarter of those.

Kidnappings Surge Amid Haiti’s Political and Economic Crises

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI — One morning in late February, Jean Joseph was driving to his hardware store in Gressier, a neighborhood in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. Another car suddenly blocked the road.

Five well-armed men ordered him out of his car. They blindfolded him and took him to a room in an unknown location. There, he says, they beat, burned, and threatened to kill him.

He heard other hostages in the room. He thought his captors shot two of them.

His assailants demanded a phone number for his family, whom they called to seek ransom in exchange for Joseph’s release. His family scrambled to gather $37,000.

After five days, the kidnappers released him.

“I have never feared so much for my life,” says Joseph, 43, a married father of two, his voice trembling. “I cannot understand why I was kidnapped. I am not rich. The income I earn is to provide for my family.”

Joseph is among scores of Haitians who have been kidnapped, a crime now routine in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest ..
